Free (& legal) Audio Software with Unbuntu Studio
High end music production software is damn expensive, but the spectrum is wide and the cost of making music keeps getting lower and lower with open-source applications, namely Unbuntu and the litany of music applications that are now available for it.
Unbuntu is a Linux distribution that is aimed at usability, and Unbuntu Studio is geared for us gear heads.
Our aim is to assemble suites of applications aimed at creative people. Suites including the best open-source applications available.
For instance, Ardour 2 - A multi track recorder/editor geared toward people familiar with Pro-Tools.
Ardour looks great, and is an amazing deal… it’s free. One major drawback: no MIDI. Luckily Ardour was awarded 2 projects in the Google Summer of Code, MIDI editing and surround panning.
Rosegarden is another free audio application that runs on Linux and has both audio and MIDI. And notation. And synths.
It can be hard to justify the work involved in getting a setup like this running. Installing a new OS, finding drivers, a new learning curve… But again, considering that the next update of Pro Tools or Cubase might cost you hundreds of dollars it just may very well pay off in the end.
